Geraghty was halfway to Susan Crookshank's when she phoned to ask if he could come an hour later than planned. Her parents, who'd been scheduled to return to Long Island that afternoon, wouldn't be flying out until morning on account of an ice storm moving up the Eastern Seaboard. She'd have dinner with them in town, drive them to their hotel, and be back at her apartment by nine-thirty. She assured him that she'd make it worth the wait, but Geraghty was relieved. In seventeen years of marriage he hadn't slept, or even seriously flirted, with a woman not his wife, and his excitement at the promise of Susan Crookshank's bed was tinged with dread. Both were employed by the same municipality--he in the Planning Department, she in Legal--and had been thrown in together when an iffy piece of rezoning wound up in court. Though the case settled, they continued to meet for longer and longer lunches, and soon an intimacy grew between them, their conversations circling ever closer to the subject of sex, until the fantasy became an inevitability. She was a big woman, a sort of childless earth mother, yet for all the surprises of her body, his desire came to settle on her mouth, which he watched with rapt attention. It was a voluptuous mouth, full-lipped and all appetite. They were finishing lunch at the restaurant that had become "their place," when with her usual matter-of-factness, she asked, "So do you want to?" "Do I want to what?" Geraghty had grown up reticent about sex--not that his parents spoke of it as shameful; they simply hadn't spoken of it at all--and his wife came out of a similar tradition. "Do I want to have sex? Do you?"
